Daybed, Victorian
Convertible daybed / sofa-bed. Victorian carved wood frame with upholstered seat, back, and bolsters; shaped crest rail with carved leaf and scroll decoration; scroll-form side panels; low rectangular seat over carved front rail and block feet; fitted with casters. The piece converts from a sofa or daybed form into a sleeping surface. Upholstery was redone by donor, who states that it retains the original horsehair. Width 6', height 38" to top of back, depth 24"

Oak carved back and frame with a leaf and scroll pattern. This opens and lifts forward toward you, like a book.
When open, a metal hidden double head support folds out for bed pillows and sleeping. This was purchased in Illinois after the Civil War by Laban Conrad Davis and his wife Martha Virginia Largent, grandparents of my mother, Margaret Virginia Temple West. A matching oak gliding rocker is part of the set (260427004). Both pieces are stuffed with original horsehair and are on small wheels.
Martha born 12/22/1853 in Hampshire Co. Va., now West Virginia; died 4/16/1930 Brandywine, W. Va.
Married Laban in Missouri 4/11/1876.
Laban born 6/20/1843 Brandywine, West Virginia, Pendleton County which during The War beame Brandywine, West Virginia, Pendleton County. Died 8/11/1937 at Brandywine, W. Va.
